Cocktails in Edinburgh New Town

Edinburgh is full of surprises. A new addition to the cafe and cocktail culture is this great restaurant we found in an early morning stroll through the New Town. Do not be fooled by the word new! This is the 18th and 19th century wonderful architecture of George Street, Queen Street, Hanover Street and of course the two stunning architectural squares at either end.

Ross Fountain

A walk through the famous Princes Street gardens is always a pleasure and the magnificent Ross Fountain is not to be missed. First installed in 1872 we watched the fountain reclaim its former glory when it was restored in 2018. It was made for the Great Exhibit of France in 1862 and happily found its final home in Edinburgh after it was gifted to the city by gunmaker Daniel Ross.

Old Town Edinburgh

Many visitors to this beautiful city are based in the medieaval Old Town area. The streets here are cobbled and the famous Royal Miles leads from the Castle on top of the rock to Holyrood Palace at the bottom the of the Royal Mile.

Although it is a distance of only one or two miles there is much to see. The tiny alleyways are known as closes in Scotland. They often reveal unexpected courtyards, gardens or homes hidden from the often crowded High Street, The streets here are full of the history of this great city, and of Scotland with many plaques on the walls to tell you which famous inventor, philosopher or doctor might have lived there in the past.

Although Sublime Scotland does not offer tours of the city of Edinburgh ourselves, we have many excellent guides we recommend who will bring the history of the city to life for you. Just ask us to add it to the start or end of your tour with us and we will do the rest.

Remember if you are visiting Scotland in August the city will be very lively as the biggest Arts Fesitval in the world takes place for four weeks. Book ahead if you would like to see a show as there is something for everyone.
